With several travel operators going bust across Europe last year, Irish operators are also feeling the pinch. Whilst those who book through such companies be financially safe if they go bankrupt, standard Travel Insurance may not be enough to automatically protect you if you organised the flights and accommodation yourself and fall fowl to such companies becoming insolvent.
Specific cover such as supplier insolvency that can either protect the hotel booking cost in part or in full and scheduled airline failure to cover the price of tickets in case of flight cancellation. However, apart from maximum cover of €1,000 per person from a handful of insurers, travel insurance policies generally do not include cover for an operator or airline going to the wall. Such protection may cost €20 per person but could be worth it in the worst case scenario.
